Our work
Community support
Relief of poverty, sickness and distress on the peninsula, without distinction of ethnicity, religion or gender, is one of the centre's charitable objects, alongside the wellbeing of the communities it serves.
Zakat
Zakat given to the centre is held in a separate account and distributed only to the categories of people entitled to it under Islamic law, by priority to those in need locally. Zakat al-Fitr collected in Ramadan is distributed before the Eid prayer, through established charities where that reaches people faster. Nothing from Zakat is spent on the centre's own running costs. Paying Zakat through the centre.
Help in hardship
If you or someone you know on the peninsula is in difficulty, with food, with money, with a crisis at home, speak to a trustee at Jumu'ah or write to [email protected]. We will help where we can and point to the right service where we cannot; every conversation is confidential.
Guidance and wellbeing
The Imam offers confidential guidance to individuals and families on matters of marriage, family and personal hardship, in the light of Islamic teaching and with compassion. The constitution also commits the centre to Islamic counselling and mental-health support, and to promoting healthy living; both will grow with the centre's capacity.
Nikah and janazah
Solemnising marriages and supporting families through funeral rites are purposes the centre will take on as it settles into a permanent home and its Imam is in post. Until then we can advise on where these services are available nearby. Ask us.
Our environment
Stewardship of the earth (khalifah) is written into our objects. In practice today that is small: no single-use plastic where we can avoid it, and a tidy space handed back after every Friday. It will grow with the rest.
