Our new home online

The new Greenwich Peninsula Islamic Centre website on a laptop

The centre has a new website, built from the ground up for the charity as it is today. Here is what it does for you, and what we would like from you.

As-salamu alaykum. Over the past year the Greenwich Peninsula Islamic Centre has grown from a Friday congregation in a borrowed room into a charitable trust with trustees, policies, a volunteer team and a capital fund for a permanent home. Our website had not kept up. This week it has: everything on it has been rebuilt, and I would like to walk you through it.

What you will use every week

  • Jumu'ah times at the top of the home page: 13:00 and 13:30, every Friday, at the Prayer Space in the Aperture Building.
  • The prayer timetable, live rather than a monthly picture: today's London times and the whole month, on the prayer times page, with the Hijri date and the next prayer at the top of every page.
  • The notice board on the home page for anything that changes at short notice, such as which daily prayers are being held, with the community Signal group as the fastest way to hear.
  • Friday sermons, published after they are delivered as PDF with the Arabic and an English translation side by side. Our aim is a PDF for every khutbah, so there is always something to go back to. The archive starts with five.
  • Giving, with every amount a tap away and the Masjid Fund kept entirely apart from running costs, as it always has been. Zakat has its own page and calculator.

What is new

Two things the old site never had. First, Our Work: the six purposes written into the centre's constitution, set out area by area, from education and programmes for women and girls to support for new Muslims and our neighbours of other faiths, and honest about what runs today and what is planned. Second, governance: who is responsible for the centre, which policies we hold ourselves to, how donations are handled, and how to raise a concern. A charity that asks for your trust should show its working.

If you have never been, visiting the centre says what to expect on a Friday, including for neighbours who are not Muslim and would like to see what happens.

Still being finished

The site is in beta, which is why there is a strip saying so at the top of every page. Some things are still being completed, and the old website's addresses no longer work, so if you had a bookmark, please take a minute to find your way around the new structure; there was not much on the old site that has not found a better home here. If something is wrong or missing, tell us through the contact page. We will fix it.

Thank you

None of this would exist without the volunteers who set up and clear away every Friday, and the donors whose generosity keeps the prayers running on the peninsula. May Allah accept it from all of us, and may He grant this community the permanent home it is working towards. Ameen.
